School systems are geared towards having kids listen, memorize, study, and take tests,” laments Assaraf.
“The way our educational system is crafted, every child sees a test score that reflects they did wrong, what they didn’t know, instead of illustrating what they do know! These judgments pigeonhole our children into certain stereotyped behaviors and ideas of self.”
As parents, we can use positive reinforcement with our children to create healthy self-esteem and then truly prepare them for what they will face on their own. There are many talented, brilliant and highly successful icons that haven’t attended college. People such as Senator John Glenn, Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs, Peter Jennings and Ted Turner have all made names for themselves and are at the top of their fields…Not from education but by having the self-confidence to follow their ideas and dreams. It is this type of education that is lacking in our school systems, and creating a generation that is ever more crippled when faced with taking care of themselves.
